Starke aiming to make his mark with Phoenix

Tuesday, 14th August 2007

Montreal-born forward Sean Starke is the latest signing for player/coach Tony Hand, and the Manchester Phoenix supremo believes he's signed a player with real potential.

"Sean's name came my way a couple of weeks ago," he said adding, "and from the checks I've made on him, I think he could be our surprise package this year. He had an excellent career in college hockey registering a point a game over four seasons and with a season in Germany before three years in the United Hockey League, he's ready for the challenge of the bmibaby Elite League, I'm sure."

Twenty-seven year old Sean Starke has good size standing 6ft 2ins and coming in at a solid 205lbs. A left-shot centreman, he describes himself as, "an all-round player, a team guy. I like to get amongst the goals, but I'll play both ends of the ice – whatever it takes."

Sean Starke scored 45 goals and 56 assists in 100 games during four years playing with the Bowdoin Polar Bears in the NCAA whilst studying for his degree in Economics, before playing a season in Germany with Neuss. A short stint playing in Australia then preceded his return to North America and his time with the Kalamazoo Wings, Flint Generals, Roanoke Valley Vipers and last season, the Quad City Mallards.

Speaking from his home in Montreal he commented, "I wasn't drafted which is every kids dream, but I've been to an NHL camp of the Washington Capitals and a couple of AHL camps too. I like the North American style of game, the UHL is quite physical and that suits my style of play. I like to be involved, enjoy the powerplay and I'm not bad in the face-off circle. I've played away from home before and really enjoyed the experience, so coming to Britain is a great opportunity for me. Once I knew of the interest in me from Manchester, it took me no time at all to agree the contract, I'm excited and can't wait to get there."
