Slough Jets 9 - Manchester Phoenix 0

Saturday, 17th December 2011

J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix travelled down to Slough for an English Premier League game on Saturday still without injured players Tony Hand and Stephen Wallace and Josh Ward is still away on GB duty. Slough were missing 3 players with GB and tough defender Adam Greener was out through suspension. Phoenix have increased their roster for a few weeks with the addition of Jamie Spurr, ex Peterborough forward. Phoenix started the stronger and tested Rockman in the Jets’ goal with two shots in the first minute. However, the fast moving Slough forward line broke through after 3.49 when top sniper Adam Calder netted from the edge of the left face off circle. Phoenix were still giving as good as they got for the next 10 minutes but found the “Rock” living up to his name. With nine and a half minutes gone, the visitors had a great chance to get back into the game with a two man advantage. The Jets’ defence stood tall and the chance soon evaporated. The period ended with both teams having good chances but the score remained 1-0 to the Jets at the end of the first 20 minutes.

After a good first period for Phoenix, the roof fell in on the team in the second. Player coach Doug Sheppard made it 2-0 on 23.39. A Phoenix breakdown let in Adam Calder for the third on 25 minutes. Things went from bad to worse as they shipped further goals from Dan Davis, two from Ryan Watt and another from Doug Sheppard made it 7-0 and a disastrous period for Phoenix.

The goal glut continued after 44.24 when Galazzi tipped the puck past Fone from a Kieras shot. It was 9-0 five minutes later as player-coach Doug Sheppard scored his hat trick goal. Phoenix rallied a bit in the last 10 minutes, managing several shots at the superb Greg Rockman but it was not to be.

Not a good night for Phoenix or their fans but, as always, it is onwards and upwards and a tough home game against the Milton Keynes Lightning.

Man of the match for Phoenix tonight was Ladislav Harabin.
