J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix travelled to Peterborough for an English Premier League and Cup game on Saturday evening. The team, still beset with injuries were looking to keep in touch with the league leaders and consolidate their cup position.

In an even first period, where the home side outshot Phoenix 12-7, both teams had good chances and brought out a couple of good saves from both goalies. Once again the Phoenix faithful had their heart s in their mouths when Martin Cingel went down on centre ice after a collision with James Ferrara. After a few minutes treatment Martin was able to skate under his own steam to the bench and resumed play a few shifts later. No goals in the first period in an even, entertaining game.

Phoenix came out of the traps the quickest in the second period and took the lead after only 40 seconds. Slava Koulikov found Juraj Faith and a pinpoint pass freed Martin Cingel to score past Stephen Wall. Phoenix dominated the next 10 minutes and only great goaltending by Wall kept the score at 1-0. Wall proved just that again as the period neared completion with a brilliant save as Tom Duggan broke free. Phantoms equalised with 21 seconds left in the second period when Luke Ferrara picked up a Fone rebound, wheeled round and placed it into the gaping net. End of two periods and the scores are level at 1-1.

The continued in its to and fro mode with end to end hockey but it was Phantoms who took the lead on 45.19 with a goal from Luke Ferrara and sealed the win four minutes later with an unassisted fortunate goal from Jeff Glowa. Shots on goal ended up 34-33 in favour of the home side in a fast entertaining game that neither side deserved to lose. Man of the match awards went to Stephen Fone for Phoenix and Jeff Glowa for the Phantoms.

Coach Hand said after the game: “I thought that the lads played very well, and we had a really good second period. However, we lost two soft goals in the third, and came up against a good goalie in Stephen Wall. We will regroup and re-focus and try and turn the result around tomorrow.”
