Ben Morgan is Phoenix fourth new face
Sheffield-born defenceman Ben Morgan has become Tony Hands’ fourth summer signing as he continues his rebuild of the Phoenix playing squad in readiness for the 2010-11 English Premier League season.
Twenty-two year old Ben Morgan is a product of the Sheffield junior system having started playing aged eight and progressing right through the junior ranks including a Grand Slam season with the ENL Sheffield Spartans and four seasons in the EPL with the Scimitars.
Standing six feet tall and tipping the scales at 190lbs, the right-shot defenceman is eager to make his mark with the Phoenix and relishes the chance to play with other Yorkshiremen already on the Phoenix roster.
Morgan laughed, “I know Greg (Wood), Luke (Boothroyd) and of course Robert (Farmer) and if he’s back, I know Steve Fone too – it’s a bit like the Sheffield Phoenix, only kidding. I’m well aware of the rivalry between teams from either side of the Pennines, and having made my choice to switch sides, I’m really looking forward to it.”
“I’ve met with and spoken to Tony before when we’ve been away on GB duty, but it was still a nice surprise to take his ‘phone call asking if I’d be interested in joining Manchester. He told me of his plans for the team, his thoughts on the role I could play and all in all, he really did a selling job on me – I didn’t need to think it over too long.”
Hand noted, “Ben is a solid player, skates well and plays a sensible aggressive defensive role. He takes the body and we need a bit more of that on the team this year. But, I‘ve also told him that I will encourage him to get forward and contribute offensively too. It’s a two way game and I believe that Ben has the potential to become a true two-way player.”
Morgan promises the fans in Manchester that they’ll certainly know he’s around. ”I do tend to be very vocal, both in the room and on the ice, the fans might well hear me over their own noise. I think of myself as a leader and I do communicate. I come to play every night, I’m determined and I see my primary role as playing the body, clearing the net and protecting my goalies. I’ve always tended to be a stay-at-home defenceman, but Tony has said he’ll be eager for me to get forward and post some numbers for the team.”
