Phoenix and Giants agree KO Cup Final dates

Sunday, 15th March 2009

After an enormous amount of dialogue between officials of the Belfast Giants and the Manchester Phoenix, together with officials of the Elite League, both clubs have now agreed to the following dates for the two games to decide the Knockout Cup Final.

The first leg will be played on Sunday March 22nd in Altrincham and will double up with the original fixture for that date in the Elite League. The Face-Off time will be the usual 5.30pm.

The second leg will be played on Thursday March 26th in the Odyssey Arena, Belfast with a 7.00pm face-off.

Commenting on the dates Phoenix GM Andy Costigan, “we’ve been trying all week to find a way to get these games in without doubling up on the last game of the league season. But the scheduling is having an effect upon the players and in the end the only sensible decision to take was to double up on the game on Sunday.

Ideally, we wanted the second leg of the Cup Final at home, but we simply couldn’t find a way to achieve that in the timescale available to us before the playoffs.

The pressure of the fixtures is as a direct result of our success in reaching two cup finals and we know our tremendous fans will turn out in force next Sunday as we complete the league campaign AND stake our claim for the Knockout Cup.”
