It wasn’t just the senior Manchester Phoenix team in good form this past weekend as the Under 14 squad travelled south for an emphatic victory over the high-flying Solihull Flames.
The Phoenix youngsters entered the Hobs Moat Road rink expecting a tough game from second in the table Flames, but it was the home side who had the tougher time as right from the outset, the Manchester squad went for the jugular.
With less than a minute on the clock, Paul Swindlehurst fired the visitors in front and in a one-sided opening period the Phoenix, courtesy of Taylor Danson, Bobby Streetly, Swindlehurst’s second and a superb solo effort from Jordan Bannon, rattled in five more markers, outshooting their hosts 18-4.
The second session was no less emphatic if a little easier on the scoreboard as the Phoenix added a further three goals – Jared Dickinson and Ryan Hulme - with the impressive Swindlehurst also completing a personal hat-trick.
Ryan Hulme with his second goal of the game and Swindlehurst with his fourth took the Phoenix into double figures in the final period before a momentary lapse allowed Flames Larose to skate away and register the home sides consolation marker.
Team Manager Rob Hutchinson commented, “Solihull have been playing really well and we were expecting a tough game. But, the mental preparation of the Phoenix team by Steve Nurse and Robyn Crebbin could hardly have been better.”
