Phoenix coach Tony Hand has moved quickly to fill the gap left in his roster by the departure of Ryan Watson by signing experienced centreman Matt Beveridge from the Newcastle Vipers.
Originally from Toronto, 31-year old Matt Beveridge has played all bar one season of his hockey career in the UK including the past three full seasons on Tyneside. Standing 5ft 10ins and tipping the scales at 185lbs, the right-shot centre will fit right into the Phoenix roster with his experience of the game in the UK.
Phoenix coach Tony Hand commented, “I heard that Matt might be available and quickly called him to see if we could get on the same page. He’s a smart player, skates well and whilst not the heaviest shooter, knows when and how to pick his spot. He’s joining the team on Sunday in time to debut against Cardiff and I’m sure the fans will give him a warm welcome.”
Beveridge noted, “I was delighted to get a call from Tony asking if I would be interested in joining Manchester and having seen them twice already this season and knowing what a good side he’s built there, I was keen to try and become a part of it. I’m pleased to sign and hopefully, I can help the team continue the good start to the season and at the same time I feel I’ve got a wee point to prove and so, I m really keen to get off to a good start with a win over the Devils.”
