Rugged winger Robin signs for Phoenix

Friday, 4th August 2006

Tony Hand's first summer of Manchester Phoenix team building is nearing completion with the signing of left-winger Robin Gomez.

Hand expressed his delight at the acquisition of Canadian Gomez purring, "I was aware of other clubs having shown an interest in signing Robin because he brings a lot to the table. The references we took all pointed to him being an impact player who can look after himself and contribute in all areas on the ice, so we decided to move as quickly as possible. He's got good size and has proven himself in the East Coast Hockey League and had two call-ups to the American Hockey League too so, he'll be a great addition to our roster."

Originally from Prince Rupert in northern British Columbia, Robin Gomez played his junior hockey largely with the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League before spending a season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Turning professional, he joined the South Carolina Stingrays where he has spent four seasons in the ECHL. Whilst playing for the Stingrays, his solid performances earned him two spells in the AHL with the Worcester Ice Cats and last season with the Hershey Bears. Robin has also donned the uniform of the Washington Capitals making exhibition game appearances for the NHL outfit.

Speaking from Prince Rupert, where he enjoys sport fishing and the odd round of golf during the summer, Robin Gomez remarked, "Deciding to join Manchester was not difficult at all. I spoke with Coach Hand and just hearing about the city and the plans for the club, I got excited and more or less made the decision right away. I spoke to a friend - Mike Kiesman - who told me about the UK and that he too was going to Manchester and that clinched it."

Commenting on his attributes, Robin commented, "I like to play a pretty simple game, I'm an up 'n down winger who looks to contribute wherever I can and weigh in with a goal or two myself. I guess you could say I play a fairly rugged style of hockey that the fans seem to like, finishing my checks etc and if I have to take care of myself, I will do. Knowing other guys on the team will certainly help me settle in so, I'm really looking forward to getting to Manchester and joining up with the rest of the team."
