London Racers have announced this afternoon the cessation of playing operations for the rest of the 2005-2006 season, following incidents which have cast doubt over the safety of the Lee Valley rink, the current Racers' home venue. A press release issued today states that "It has become clear that the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority through the Lee Valley Ice Centre are unable to provide a suitably safe venue for 'elite' level hockey."
The release goes on to say that the Racers are not prepared to sacrifice the safety of those in attendance at games in favour of keeping operations ongoing. "The Club, its investors and sponsors are simply unwilling to put commercial interests before that of the safety of players and fans," is the statement made in the press release. The London Racers organisation has apparently explored all potential avenues and has been unable to come up with a suitable alternative location for the team to play from, leaving them with no choice but to cease playing operations for the season.
