The Manchester Phoenix made another addition to their squad this afternoon, with the signing of a familiar face, Gareth O’Flaherty. Gareth will be available for this weekend’s games against Guildford and Basingstoke.
O’Flaherty iced 51 games for Phoenix last season following a move from the Coventry Blaze, and registered 16 points in total, including three goals. Gareth elected to join the Hull Pirates this summer, making ten appearances and contributing two points, and Phoenix were quick to snap him up once the club became aware of his availability.
Gareth began his career in the Guildford junior system, playing at U16, U18 and U19 levels, before making the move into senior hockey with the Bracknell Hornets and Haringey Greyhounds. Gareth spent four seasons with the Nottingham Lions, including a career-high 51 points in just 23 games during the 2012-13 season.
This impressive season led to a move to the Telford Tigers in the EPL, and then two seasons with the Coventry Blaze in the Elite League, where Gareth won an Elite League Playoff Title.
Gareth O’Flaherty said: “My first port of call was to speak to the Phoenix, and although I was aware of interest from other teams, I was keen to re-sign in Manchester. I’m very pleased with how quickly the move has come about and can’t wait to get started.”
Phoenix Coach Tony Hand commented: “As soon as Gareth became available, I knew we needed to talk. He’s played for Phoenix before, so I know his style and strengths, and how he will fit into our team. I’m confident that Gareth will once again become a valuable asset for the Phoenix.”
Ben Wood is also working hard behind the scenes on regaining fitness, and hopes to return to the squad shortly.
