Phoenix edged out by late goals in Telford

Monday, 12th September 2016

Manchester Phoenix responded strongly to Saturday night’s defeat against Hull by putting in an impressive display in a 4-1 defeat at Telford.

Both sides registered eleven shots in an open and skilful first period, but it was Phoenix who secured the only goal as Joni Tuominen set up Roman Malinik at 15:41 for his second goal in as many games.

The game turned in the second period as Phoenix were unable to take advantage of a powerplay before Tuominen picked up a 2+10 penalty for a hit from behind.  Telford promptly levelled with the extra man through Doug Clarkson at 32:28, and shortly after, Milan Kolena put the home side in front at 36:47.

The final period saw Phoenix work hard to get back into the game, and despite a number of chances, Ondrej Raszka in the Tigers net held firm.  Two late goals put a gloss on the score-line for Telford as Corey McEwan at 52:45 and then Matty Davies at 58:34 secured the win.

Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Milton Keynes Lightning, with a 4:30pm face-off in Blackpool.
