Bulldog Bultje boost for Phoenix

Thursday, 8th January 2004

Manchester Phoenix have completed the signing of Dutch international forward Mark Bultje from the Amsterdam Bulldogs beating off interest from at least two other Elite League clubs in the process.

Phoenix head coach Rick Brebant commented, “As we have said previously, we always felt the possibility that Miroslav Skovira might not stay with the club due to off-ice reasons and so we started the search for a replacement early. We made contact with Mark some weeks ago to enquire about his situation and he expressed interest in a return to Manchester.”

Thirty-year old Bultje played previously in Manchester with the Storm before joining the Amsterdam Bulldogs. He has been a major force in the Bulldogs lifting the Dutch Cup recently and agreed an early release in order to return to the UK and the Phoenix.

Bultje noted, “Amsterdam is a great city and I’ve been very happy there, but the chance to play in the UK again was too good to pass up and as soon as the Bulldogs intimated they would be prepared to release me, I knew Manchester was a good move to make. I know the team has had some great results recently and a few disappointments, hopefully I can bring some more success to the club in the second half of the season so we can have a real run at the playoffs.”

Brebant added, “Mark is a tenacious forward who can play either at centre or on the wing. He has a great work ethic, great speed and no shortage of grit. I’m delighted he has signed for us, because I know there was interest in him from elsewhere. His joining the club means the hole of Miroslav leaving is quickly and successfully filled and he will make his debut on Friday in London.”
