Manchester Phoenix made their second visit to the Hull Pirates on Saturday night, icing a full strength side.
Phoenix created a couple of early opportunities but were stung by a quick break from Hull, with Finnish forward Tommi Laine opening the scoring at 5:13. The goal didn’t discourage Phoenix however, with the visitors piling on the pressure which was rewarded when Stanislav Gron came from behind the net to set up Ben Russell who blasted home his first Phoenix goal at 9:29.
Hull forward Warren Tait picked up a 5+game penalty for high sticks shortly after, and Phoenix made the Powerplay opportunity count at 13:49 when Gron squeezed the puck past Baston, with the period ending 2-1.
Phoenix dominated the opening stages of the second period but Hull came back into the game, and Fone had to make excellent saves to deny both Laine and Josh Gent. After Mark Thomas picked up an elbowing penalty, Hull then had another player, Jonathan Kirk, ejected for high sticking. On the subsequent Powerplay, a Michal Satek blast from the blue line at 38:36 made it 3-1.
Phoenix extended their lead at 42:10 when Gron scored a wrap around for his second of the night. After a spell of pressure from the home side, Robin Kovar scored a sublime goal at 50:14 as he raced into the zone and fired past Baston. The one-way traffic continued as Gron set up Russell to score his second goal of the evening at 55:23 to make the final score 6-1.
Phoenix are back in action tomorrow night as they host the Telford Tigers in Deeside with a 6:30pm face-off.
