A short-benched Phoenix team fell to a 6-2 defeat at the Basingstoke Bison this evening.
In an open first period, Phoenix survived an early penalty to Mark Thomas, before Bison’s Joe Greener picked up a 2+10 penalty for a check to the head at 12:44. Shortly after however, Robin Kovar picked up a penalty, with former Phoenix man Ciaran Long capitalising on the Powerplay with a powerful shot from the blue line at 15:36. Phoenix hit back though with a fantastic individual goal from James Archer late in the period at 19:15.
In the second, Phoenix were unable to take the lead despite being presented with a 5 on 3 Powerplay for almost a minute early in the period, and Tomas Karpov restored Bison’s lead with another Powerplay goal at 32:08. Bison then hit Phoenix with two goals in the last ten seconds of the period through Declan Balmer and Joe Greener to lead 4-1.
Phoenix hit back early in the final period with Mark Thomas grabbing his first goal since returning to the club at 40:35. However the visitors were unable to build on this and Stuart Mogg made it 5:2 at 52:33 before Bison wrapped up the scoring in the final minute thanks to Alan Lack.
Phoenix Head Coach Tony Hand commented: “Losing Stan to injury was never going to help but I thought the boys battled all night despite taking a couple of further knocks during the game and we’ll be ready for the visit of Guildford tomorrow night.”
Phoenix host the Guildford Flames in Deeside on Sunday evening with a 6:30pm face-off.
