Tuesday morning saw the news released by the British Ice Hockey Writers’ Association that Manchester Phoenix star Rick Brebant will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon following the Elite League playoff finals.
Brebant, who retires from playing on Sunday after a glorious 17-year career in this country to return to North America, said of his induction, “Naturally, I’m honoured to be placed in the Hall of Fame – it’s a great honour to be recognised by people involved in the sport and for me it shows that people believe you’ve done something good for the sport. I’ve always been passionate about the game and I’m really very chuffed to be inducted this quick – normally you have to be out of the game for a while before you’re considered.”
Brebant, who has won honours throughout his playing career in Britain with Durham, Cardiff, Nottingham, Manchester, London and Sheffield added, “it’s a great piece of news and combined with us making it to the finals weekend, hopefully we can make some more great news down the line. We have to go out and give it our all on the weekend and the bottom line is if you can’t get up for these games… We just have to focus on Saturday and beating Nottingham in their own backyard – we can’t even think about Sunday. Saturday is about showing up, doing what you have to do and giving ourselves the best opportunity to make it to the final on Sunday as we can.”
“We have winning experience in our locker room,” he continued, “Mike Morin has won, Platter has won things and we’ve got good experienced guys who know what it takes as well as myself, and of course Heaves the coach has a great record himself of picking up silverware. It would be great for the club, the fans and the players if we can win the championship and it would be a very special way for me to say goodbye to the fans and the game in this country – there’s nothing more I would like than to receive my certificate in uniform.”
