Heavy loss for Phoenix in Berkshire

Monday, 2nd December 2013

Bracknell Bees 8 - Manchester Phoenix 2

Phoenix scorers: Tony Hand and Michal Psurny

J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix fell to their heaviest defeat of the season as Bracknell gained revenge for the previous evening’s loss in Altrincham.

Phoenix started much the better team and after six minutes were in command with a two goal lead. The visitors hit the net early when at 1.33 Tony Hand scored, assisted by Michal Psurny and Robert Schnabel.  Bees then hit penalty trouble and Phoenix were on a five on three in the 4th minute as Chris Wiggins (Interference) and Lukas Smital( Hooking) sat in the box. Wiggins had just returned to the ice when Tony Hand found Michal Psurny free at the back post to double the lead. Robin Kovar was awarded the second assist. Five minutes of defensive lapses cost Phoenix dear in the middle of the first period as the Bees hit three goals to take a 3-2  lead. Ollie Bronniman scored twice on 10.04 and 15.10 with a Matt Foord marker sandwiched in between at 14.41. A period that started with promise and ended with a shot count of 22-8 in the visitors’ favour saw the Bees in front 3-2.

Just as in Altrincham on Saturday, it was the home side who took the second period honours. Bees scored three unanswered goals in the second phase of the game with Matt Foord getting his hat trick with two and Pavel Strychek also scoring. James Galazzi and Robert Schnabel finally stopped their talking and dropped the gloves on 38 minutes and a bout of fisticuffs ensued. A win for the Phoenix man but it was the Bees who went to the second break with a healthy 6-2 lead.

Things quietened down a bit in the third period with the points seemingly in the bag for the Bees. Chances still came Phoenix’s way but it was a rampant home side that added two more goals late in the game. Kamil Tverdek scored on 56 minutes and Bees man of the match, Matt Foord hit his fourth of the night to complete the rout and end the match at 8-2 to Bracknell.

Coach Hand commented after the game:

“Both teams had chances but it was Bracknell who took theirs, all credit to them for a good win. We lost some soft goals and did not put away the many chances we created. These things happen in hockey and it is how we respond to this that will be important. I am disappointed we did not capitalise on our great start to the game but once again, credit to Bracknell for their win.”
