Elite League directors endorse inter-league competition

Sunday, 7th March 2004

At a board meeting of the Elite League directors held in Belfast last Thursday, it was confirmed that the Elite League have endorsed the idea and proposals put forward by Ice Hockey UK and the International Ice Hockey Federation to introduce competition next season between the teams from the Elite League and the British National League.

Elite League Chairman Eamon Convery commented, "When the idea of a inter-league competition was first mooted, I was confident that the Elite League directors would agree with it. The proposals for a sensible and gradual coming together of the two bodies are welcomed by all and I am sure that the on-ice competition next season will generate a lot of interest and help forge even better working relationships."

With the first of the two-legged final games of the Challenge Cup between the newly crowned league champion Sheffield Steelers and runners-up Nottingham Panthers taking place next week, and the post-season playoffs just around the corner, the Elite League is building to a massive crescendo with its finals weekend in April.

Convery confirmed that ticket sales for the first Elite League Finals weekend in Nottingham have been better than anticipated. "The event will be sold out as the clubs are reporting an extraordinary demand for tickets. The showpiece weekend will bring the curtain down on our first season and will send everyone off into the summer for a well-earned break, but invigorated to prepare well for the new season in September."
