J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix entertain Basingstoke Bison at the Ice Dome on Sunday with the usual 17.30 face off.
This game is the match up that both sets of fans have been waiting for. Top of the league against second. Bison have the edge on Phoenix so far this season with 2 wins out of 2. However Phoenix are on a 9 game winning streak and, to add further spice to the head to head, Bison were the last team to beat Phoenix at their fortress home.
Bison have the best defence in the league with ex Elite netminder Stevie Lyle between the pipes. He has a fantastic 93.91 save percentage and is the in-form keeper in the league. Patrolling the blue line in front of him is veteran Tony Redmond and the experienced Kurt Reynolds. Up front, ex Elite forward Greg Chambers is finding his scoring touch and currently has 26 points. Jaroslav Cesky, recently joined from Telford, is also a marksman to watch out for.
Phoenix will be all out for revenge after outplaying Bison last time at the Dome only to come up against the Welsh brick wall that is Stevie Lyle. The Phoenix lines are all scoring at the moment and the whole squad is focussed on keeping the points in Altrincham.
The club’s press officer caught up with coach Tony Hand for his thoughts on the upcoming weekend:
“We have two tough games again this weekend. Swindon showed us all last Sunday they are a team that does not give up. We played well down there last time out and we are looking forward to the game. As for Sunday, they don’t come any bigger than first against second playing each other. Bison are a well balanced team and we will have to be at our best against them at the Dome. They have a mean defence but we are scoring goals and there is no reason why we cannot continue our fantastic home run with a win. We suffered last week with injuries to Stephen Fone and Ondrej Pozivil but they are both responding to treatment and hopefully we will have a full squad for the weekend games."
There really is no excuse for not heading to the Dome on Sunday to watch the two best teams in the league. The Phoenix fans have been described by some of the squad as the best fans they have ever played in front of and Tony’s team are doing their bit on the ice. The faithful will, no doubt, be in fine voice as the extra players in the stands.
