Phoenix scorers: Stephen Wallace x 2 and Juraj Faith.
J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix made the journey down to Milton Keynes for their last regular season visit. After losing the first fixture in early October, Phoenix had beaten Lightning on three occasions and were looking to pick up the points to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.
Phoenix were without the on ice services of player coach Tony Hand and Lightning were missing agitator in chief Grant McPherson and Jamie Line.
The first period was fairly even but neither team could find the breakthrough and the score remained at 0-0 after 20 minutes. Lightning’s Adam Brittle was penalised for boarding at 21.43 and with just over half of the penalty served, Stephen Wallace put Phoenix ahead. Juraj Faith doubled the lead on 33.26 and Phoenix held on to their two-goal lead going into the second break.
Lightning started the stronger in the third period but it took a short-handed goal on 52.07 by Leigh Jamieson to reduce the arrears. Nick Poole was still sitting in the penalty box when Phoenix scored their third and probably deciding goal with Stephen Wallace bagging his second of the night on 53.04. Phoenix comfortably saw out the remainder of the game to take two very well earned points back up north with them.
Man of the match for Phoenix was awarded to Jaroslav Spelda.
