Capital result as Phoenix win at the Palace

Friday, 3rd October 2003

Manchester Phoenix gained their first win on the road this season with a 6-3 victory over the London Racers at the Alexandra Palace.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Phoenix as the Racers gave them a first period fright to lead 3-2 at the first interval having fallen behind to a delightful wrist shot from Dwight Parrish. Racers equalised and took the lead before Miroslav Skovira showed great persistence to pull Phoenix level. Racers again took the lead when mistake by Phoenix goalie Jayme Platt gifted the home side an 18th minute third marker.

The second period however saw Phoenix, with Dave Clancy in goal, move up a gear and after Skovira notched his second goal just past the half hour mark, they never looked back and a powerplay marker from David Kozier regained the lead shortly afterwards.

The final period saw Man of the Match Petteri Lotila deservedly get on the score sheet and a picture-book finish from captain George Awada after great passing plays from Jeff Sebastian and Shin Larsson-Yahata wrapped up the scoring.

Head coach Rick Brebant remarked, “I though we played very well tonight. We gifted them two of their three goals but once we had settled down again, I thought we were always in control of the game. Our special teams worked well - penalty killing was very good and the two goals on the powerplay were very pleasing. The boys will work in the gym on Saturday as we prepare for the trip to Sheffield on Sunday.”
