The off-ice report

Wednesday, 18th May 2005
This week's signing news sees Coventry Blaze retaining the services of GB International player Russ Cowley for a fifth season, having started out with the Blaze on a two-way contract with Swindon back in the 2000-2001 season.  Coach Paul Thompson sees a lot of potential in Cowley, saying that "He is still a young man and can still improve, but I am getting a Great Britain international and a Grand Slam winning player who will play another major role for us next season.  I rate Russ as one of the best, if not the best, young talent in the country, and I'm delighted that he is back on board."

Over the water in Belfast, the question of who will fill the top spot at the Giants remains unanswered.  Despite much speculation amongst fans that player-coach Tony Hand would be back, it now seems that a change is coming.  Belfast's Managing Director John Elliott has announced that Hand won't be coming back to the Giants, and that the search is underway for a replacement.

"After long discussions with Tony Hand the Giants were unable to secure the services of the Elite League's top points scorer," says Elliott.  "Tony made it clear from the outset that his family circumstances were a difficult issue if he was to return to Belfast.  Ultimately Tony has had enough time to reflect and despite much soul searching, I can confirm that he will not be coaching the Belfast Giants next season."

As for who will take over the coaching role, the Giants are looking at several options but are keen to push forward the name of former coach Dave Whistle, most recently with the Cardiff Devils.  John Elliott would be pleased to see Whistle return, saying that "With Dave's previous experience and success in Belfast I believe we have the potential to see silverware back in Belfast next season.  Current work commitments by the coaches being considered means that a decision may not be reached until the first week of June."

Basingstoke Bison have bolstered their defence with the signing of British talent Danny Meyers.  The former Bison returns to Basingstoke following a stint with ex-BNLers Bracknell Bees, and Meyers caught the eye of Bison coach Mark Bernard during the National Cup cross-over matches last season.

"Danny will bring size and passion which are two things you can not teach a player," states Bernard.  "He moves the puck very well and can chip in offensively which he proved by gaining 28 points, the fact that 8 of those points came in his 14 games against the Elite League proves to me that he will be a very valuable player for us."

Newcastle Vipers have signed Michael Tasker for the 2005-2006 season, much to the delight of team co-owner Rob Wilson.  "Michael is a quality player who has performed in the Elite League before," says Wilson. "He brings a great work ethic and determination to the team, and I'm delighted to have him on my team for the Elite League campaign."

Tasker perviously served as captain of the Coventry Blaze during the Elite League's inaugural season before making the move back up to Tyneside where he had previously iced as a member of the Durham Wasps.

The Vipers have today announced that they have retained their captain for the forthcoming season, with Jonathan Weaver confirming his intentions to continue playing in Newcastle.
