Wallace boost for Phoenix

Saturday, 23rd January 2010

Manchester Phoenix have moved to boost their offensive options with the signing of 25-year old left-winger Stephen Wallace from English Premier League rivals, Sheffield Scimitars.

The native of Billingham on Teeside was released by the Sheffield Scimitars last week and Phoenix player coach Tony Hand immediately made enquiries about him.

"Stephen is a gritty forward who knows how to put the puck in the net and I felt he could help us as we enter the final stages of the season. We're still in the hunt for the league title, have a Cup semi-final looming ahead of us and of course, there are the playoffs to look forward to. I was surprised Sheffield released him, but their decision will hopefully work to our advantage."

From his perspective, Wallace noted, "I was gutted to be cut from the Scimitars roster, but I'm happy to have found another club quickly. I had a couple of teams contact me, but when I spoke to Tony Hand, I immediately thought Manchester was the best opportunity for me."

"Tony told me that the Phoenix are in a tough, tight battle, and how determined he is that the team battle all the way to give themselves a shot at silverware. The team has had a few disappointing results, but I know from playing against them earlier in the season, you cannot take the Phoenix lightly as they have tremendous scoring ability."

"I like to score goals and I'm coming to Manchester to do just that. I'll look to bring some fresh energy to the team and it would great for all of us if we can make the likes of Milton Keynes, Slough and Guildford very nervous of who's in their rearview mirror."

Stephen Wallace will wear the number 14 shirt and makes his debut for the Phoenix when they travel to the league-leading Milton Keynes Lightning today, before his home debut against the Swindon Wildcats in Altrincham on Sunday - face-off at 5.30pm.
