Brebant delight as Skovira signs for Phoenix

Friday, 5th September 2003

Manchester Phoenix head coach Rick Brebant could hardly conceal his delight as the signed contract paperwork on Slovakian forward Miroslav Skovira spewed out of the clubs fax machine late last night.

“This player has all the makings of an MVP in the Elite League,” beamed Brebant. “I could not believe it when his details came our way, I had to pinch myself I wasn’t dreaming. Throughout his career, he has averaged almost a point a game and played at a high level. Everywhere he’s played he’s been right up there amongst the top scorers and we knew there would be interest from other parties in a player of his quality hence, our keenness to sign him.”

Thirty-year old Miroslav Skovira has eight years experience of the Slovak Extraliga, one of Europe’s top leagues and has also iced in Italy with HC Bolzano Foxes and spent time in North America too. As a junior player in season 93/94 he top scored for the Olds Grizzly’s in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and signed with the Pensacola Ice Pilots in the East Coast before returning to play in Slovakia.

Brebant enthused, “Miroslav is a top winger with tremendous experience. A team in Russia were after him and so were others in this country too, but I’m delighted to say he has signed with the Phoenix. He will give our forward lines another dimension and speaking English will help him settle right in with the rest of the guys. He will also be a tremendous influence on our younger players, I really am very pleased he’s ours.”

Speaking from his home in Poprad Miroslav said, “I’m very happy to be coming to Manchester. I went to Russia for a trial, but that team was very defensive. I like to play attacking hockey, make goals and score goals. I look forward to play there very soon and make Manchester successful in hockey as well as football.”
