Over 11,000 ice hockey fans watched two exciting games in the bmibaby Elite League over the weekend as the country's top four teams battled it out for supremacy.
Friday evening 5,500 witnessed one of the games of the season in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast as the top two teams battled it out. The Belfast Giants on an incredible 16-game straight winning streak saw their title aspirations jolted as the long-time league leading Coventry Blaze came from behind to force sudden death overtime before taking a vital victory.
Barely had the dust settled in Belfast than the leagues bitterest rivalry saw another chapter unfold in South Yorkshire. And another bumper crowd of over 5,800 saw the hometown Sheffield Steelers take on and beat the Nottingham Panthers 2-1 in a tight game between the teams currently occupying third and fourth places in the league respectively.
Eamon Convery, Chairman of the bmibaby Elite League enthused, "What a weekend for our sport, showing once again what an outstanding and exciting product the Elite League and Ice Hockey is. Belfast, Sheffield and Nottingham are all chasing the Coventry Blaze at the top end of the table and Edinburgh and Hull are both fighting to make the top eight and the post-season playoff games. Every game at this stage of the season has real meaning and that's why we are seeing some excellent attendances."
