The New Year period was a good one for the Belfast Giants, with a 4-1 home win against Nottingham at the end of 2004 topped off with a 6-3 win over Newcastle at the start of 2005. A return visit to Nottingham on the 2nd Jan saw the teams split the points with a four-apiece scoreline after overtime following a late marker from Paul Moran cancelling out ex-Phoenixer George Awada's go-ahead goal.
Basingstoke Bison continued to prop up the table with a 2-4 home loss to Sheffield coming close on the heels of a 2-0 away loss to Guildford in cross-league competition, despite being 2-0 up against the Steelers at the end of the first period thanks to Duncan Dalmao and ex-Stormer Shawn Maltby. Elsewhere, Coventry Blaze gained the upper hand with a 4-2 win over Dundee Stars in cross-league competition, with Joel Poirier sealing the game following markers from Neal Martin, Russ Cowley and Chris McNamara. Scott Barnes and Corey Morgan netted for Dundee.
