Alex Dunn completes Phoenix blueline

Friday, 11th July 2008

Tony Hand has completed his new defensive line-up for the Manchester Phoenix with the signing of gritty American blueliner Alex Dunn from the Odessa Jackalopes in the Central Hockey League.

Twenty-six year old Alex Dunn, originally from Waterford in Michigan, turned professional just over two years ago having graduated from Lake Superior State University with a degree in Fire Science. Having completed his senior year, he played the latter stages of the 2005-06 season with the Idaho Steelheads before heading south to Odessa where he played under former Sheffield Steelers coach Don McKee.

Tony Hand commented, “When Alexs’ name came my way and I saw he’d played with the Jackalopes, I put a call into Don and he told me Alex would be an excellent signing. Don described him as a very reliable, gritty and solid defenceman, the sort of guy who plays with an edge to his game and you can rely on in all situations, and that appealed to me.”

Standing 5ft 11ins, right-shot Alex Dunn tips the scales at 195lb and he said, “playing overseas at some point has always been in the back of my mind, and guys I’ve spoken to speak well of the UK and Manchester. They told me the fans there like to see an honest effort and I believe I’ll bring that to the team. I play a hard-nosed, chippy and gritty game, but like to add a little offence too when the time is right. I consider myself a decent skater, like to move the puck quickly to get things going and get the team moving forward.”

Despite being from Michigan, Alex Dunn is not a Detroit Red Wings fan. “Actually no, where the NHL is concerned I’m a Colorado Avalanche fan and I guess that’ll make life interesting as I’ve been told that one of the other guys on the team is a big Wings fan. I’m sure we’ll get along – the main thing is that we play well together for Manchester and look to win a championship along with the rest of the guys. My girlfriend Mandi and I are really looking forward to the experience, August can’t come quick enough.”

Tony Hand closed saying, “Alex is my final defensive signing and I’m very comfortable with the way things are looking, I can now concentrate on the final forward positions I’ve yet to fill. We have signed another forward and as soon as we get work permit clearance, we’ll make that announcement.”
