Walker back for third season with Phoenix

Tuesday, 3rd June 2008

Phoenix head coach Tony Hand has re-signed fellow Scottish forward Adam Walker for a third season with the club, and the player knows this is a big year for him.

“Naturally, I’m very pleased to be coming back to Manchester, I really like the city, and club, it’s become a second home for me,” noted the Kirkcaldy native. “I never really wanted to go anywhere else, but at the end of last season I had a lot of thinking to do. I needed to re-assess things both for and about myself.”

Right-shot Walker who will turn 22-years of age before the new season begins burst into the Phoenix team with a creditable 13 goals and 10 assists in his debut season, but struggled last season to make the same impact. “Last year was a difficult one for me and I needed to evaluate precisely why. I wasn’t really happy with myself and the bottom line is, I need to improve and keep on improving. I wanted to come back, but I also knew that nothing was certain, so when Tony and I spoke I was pleased.”

He continued, “This will be my third year with the Phoenix and I don’t want to be a bit-part player for the club. It’s a year in which I really need to establish myself and that will only happen if I work harder and earn it on merit. With the eleven imports ruling this year, I think this will help me as hopefully, I’ll be playing with more experienced line mates and that alone should help my game.”

Tony Hand commented, “Walks and I have spoken and he knows he didn’t do himself justice last season. He knows he has to re-apply himself to the job of being a professional hockey player and that will start, like everyone else, by coming to training camp fit, in good shape, and ready to go both physically and mentally. He’s shown what he is capable of, now he has to show the hunger and desire in battle to achieve it consistently.”
