Manchester Phoenix Player Coach Tony Hand has taken a tough decision to release British forward Rhys McWilliams from his contract with the club with immediate effect.
Hand advised, "It's never a very pleasant task to release a player from a contract and this was no exception. Rhys has worked hard and we want to thank him for his efforts this season. I felt a need however to make a change and Rhys understands my position and thinking. He's a good guy in the locker room and we wish him the very best wherever he goes to play to further his career in hockey."
In 44 appearances for the Phoenix this season, the Birmingham-born forward scored one goal and one assist and collected 16 penalty minutes.
Asked if he was looking to bring in a replacement for Birmingham-born McWilliams, Hand noted, "As a coach, you're always looking to strengthen if at all possible. Right now though, if we need another body, I'll probably look to utilise players from within our own system unless somebody comes our way with the required level of experience."
