Phoenix in the hands of the Wolfman

Tuesday, 1st August 2006

Tony Hand has completed the signing of his Number One netminder and in 6ft 5inch American Jason Wolfe, he believes the Phoenix will be in safe hands.

"We'd been looking at a couple of options for the starting goalie," commented the Phoenix coach adding, "and then Jason contacted us. Very quickly, we went to work checking him out and we liked what we saw and heard about him. He's a big goalie and will certainly fill the net, and that alone will cause opposition forwards a few problems. I told him about our new rink, team and what a great city Manchester is and I was again impressed by the manner in which he conducted the negotiations."

From College Park in Maryland, 28-year old Jason Wolfe played four years at Merrimack College while studying for a degree in Psychology and Business. Turning professional, he joined the Reading Royals before spending his first full pro-year with Adirondack in the United Hockey League. Moving back into the East Coast Hockey League, a season with the Roanoke Express saw him called up the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League for a month. Last season he played with the Augusta Lynx and his form saw him courted by other clubs before he agreed terms with the Phoenix.

Describing his style of play, 'Wolfie' remarked, "I guess I'd say I'm a big, athletic, butterfly netminder, and I'm hungry to succeed and reward the faith Coach Hand has placed in me." In his off-season, Jason puts back into the game by running private goalie schools for younger talent and helping out with other hockey camps.

And about the move to Europe he added, "I've thought about it before having visited Germany while playing in college. I know some guys who've played in the UK before and they're really enjoyed it there, in fact Jayme Platt recommended the Phoenix to me. It's a chance for Heather and I to see Europe, experience a different culture and for me, the chance to prove myself in a new league. We're both excited and looking forward to the challenge the Phoenix have offered, tell the fans 'Wolfie' is rarin' to go."
