Manchester Phoenix have confirmed the release of Finnish defenceman Mikko Niemi from his short term contract with the club.
Niemi was originally signed purely as cover after Eric Lind left the club to return to North America. Phoenix coach Rick Brebant noted, “Mikko came in on a month long contract and we extended it slightly while we looked to try and find a more experienced player. That search has proven difficult and in the mean time Mikko found another team and so as we agreed earlier, he has now moved on and we wish him well.”
Phoenix are continuing to search for a suitable defenceman to bring in ahead of the January 30th signing deadline and a club spokesperson added, “It seems like we’ve been looking for a d-man practically all season. We’re still working hard but time is now against us hence Rick is playing again. He didn’t want to and we didn’t want him too, but he is willing to do what it takes to ensure we make the playoffs and as a club, we give him enormous credit and respect.”
