Phoenix host the Basingstoke Bison on Sunday evening, looking to avenge the 6-2 defeat suffered in Hampshire two weeks ago.
Games between the two teams are usually exciting and skilful affairs, but the short-benched Phoenix came up short in the first meeting of the season despite goals from James Archer and Mark Thomas.
Last season’s games followed a similar pattern, with Phoenix losing all three away games by narrow margins but winning all three home games, including an 8-3 success in November when Michal Psurny registered a hat trick.
However, it would be the Play-Off Quarter Final matches which fans of both teams will remember most. Phoenix went into the away leg trailing by a goal and despite being 2-1 down after the first period, Phoenix stormed back with three second period goals which were enough to send the team to Coventry.
Phoenix have won all of their three home league games so far this season against the MK Lightning, Guildford Flames and Sheffield Steeldogs. Last Sunday’s 5-2 win over Sheffield was particularly impressive, with Michal Satek grabbing his first Phoenix hat trick and Robin Kovar increasing his points total to 15 in just six games.
The Bison meanwhile sat top of the table before last weekend’s games, but after winning on penalty shots against Hull, they then suffered a 4-1 defeat at the Bracknell Bees on Sunday. Basingstoke are expected to be title contenders this year after keeping hold of the majority of their roster, and adding two key players.
Slovakian netminder Tomas Hiadlovsky arrived from the Edinburgh Capitals after an impressive three seasons in the Elite League and forward Shaun Thompson was signed from the Phoenix after registering almost a point a game last season.
Face-off at Deeside is 6:30pm on Sunday evening for a game no one will want to miss.
