Manchester Phoenix 12 - Blackburn Hawks 5
Phoenix scorers : Frankie Bakrlik x 4, Jared Dickinson x 3, Bobby Chamberlain x 2, Robin Kovar x 2, Jack Watkins
J Davidson sponsored “Men of Iron”, Manchester Phoenix, had a comfortable night at the Dome on Sunday with a comprehensive winning display against Blackburn Hawks.
A large crowd eagerly anticipated a thrilling encounter and the start did not disappoint the Hawks fans as their team took the lead with just 10 seconds played. Jared Owen was credited with the goal but it was a horrendous mix up between Luke Boothroyd and Declan Ryan that allowed the puck to trickle between the net minder’s pads for 1-0. Phoenix equalised on 4.34 when Frankie Bakrlik took a pass from behind the net by Joe Graham and found space in front of goal to rip the puck past Stuart Ashton in the Hawks’ goal. 27 seconds later and it was 2-1 Phoenix with a Robin Kovar goal assisted by Shaun Thompson and Joe Graham. Announcer Andy Wood hardly had time to announce the Phoenix go-ahead goal when Adam Brittle took a pass from brother Luke to make it 2-2 and stun the Faithful into silence.
Phoenix upped the pace and Frankie hit his second of the evening with another trade mark bullet off the post and crossbar. Assists went to Bobby Chamberlain and Luke Boothroyd. 9.50 and Jack Watkins scored. Adam Walker worked hard down the left wing and his pin-point pass across the edge of the crease found Jack for the tap in. Phoenix rounded off the 1st period scoring with their 5th goal on 16 minutes. Forward Frankie Bakrlik hit his hat trick goal on the power play with Oliver Lomax in the penalty box on a rather dubious hooking call. Shaun Thompson was awarded an assist. The period ended with Phoenix in charge at 5-1 and a weary looking Hawks team quickly left the ice for a well earned rest.
Phoenix started the second period looking to wrap the game up and two quick goals from youngster Jared Dickinson did just that. The first on 22.54 came from a Robin Kovar pass and a second assist to Ben Wood. The second 2 minutes later came after a wonderful mazy run by Kovar and a perfect pass for Jared to score. Hawks hit back on 28.55 with Adam Brittle scoring his second of the night but the Dome belonged to young Jared a minute later as he scored his hat trick goal. Assists went to Shaun Thompson and James Neil. The home side were rampant now and further goals by Bakrlik, Kovar and Chamberlain made the score 11-3 at the second break.
Phoenix rested their two imports in the third and gave a fair share of ice time to youngsters Craig Pollitt, Michael Gilbert and Jack Dillon. Gilbert came within a couple of inches of scoring and Craig Pollitt looked assured at the back on his shifts. Blackburn are well known for not giving up and they scored two goals in 12 seconds through Adam Brittle (hat trick goal) and Jared Owen with his second. Phoenix had the last word on 44.24 with Bobby Chamberlain hitting his second of the night. Final score 12-5 to Phoenix.
Jared Dickinson took the man of the match award for Phoenix with Adam Brittle winning the beers for the Hawks.
