Phoenix made a great start to their road game last night with a goal on 51 seconds. Phantoms failed to clear the puck and Scott McKenzie pounced to make it 1-0. Phoenix were looking dangerous, despite Phantoms having more possession, and made it 2-0 on 7.03 through Michal Psurny. He took charge of the puck on the blueline and scored over Damien King’s shoulder.

Phantoms struck back quickly and reduced the arrears 37 seconds later as Tom Scanlon scored.  Phoenix upped their game again and once again took a two goal lead with 15.34 on the clock. Joachim Flaten scored from close range to lift the Phoenix faithful. The first period goal fest was not over as top sniper Ondrej Lauko netted with 90 seconds left. End of the first period with Phoenix up 3-2.

Phantoms upped their game in the second and dominated play but found Stephen Fone in great form. Phoenix silenced the home crowd on 27.35 when Flaten scored his second of the night to restore their two goal lead once again. The scorer was not troubled again in the period and Phoenix went to the third with a 4-2 lead.

Phantoms again took the game to Phoenix in the third but found their visitors hard to break down. Phoenix were still looking dangerous when in possession and closed down the Phantoms when on defence. Manchester were looking like holding on for the win as the clock ran down  but lost a third goal when Jordan Cownie found space to flip the puck over Fone’s shoulder into the net. Phantoms found another gear and with time running out, pulled the netminder for the extra skater. They won a face off in the Phoenix zone and, with bodies everywhere in front of the net, Tom Carlon got a stick on the puck to force it into the net for the equaliser on 59.28.

Phantoms looked the more likely to score in the extra period but Phoenix held fast to force the game into a penalty shoot-out.

Lauko took the first shot and shot the puck past Fone. In-form Michal Psurny took the first shot for Phoenix but saw the shot blocked by King. Carlon missed the next one but Ondrej Pozivil scored through the five hole to draw Phoenix level. Luke Ferrara fired past Fone, putting Phantoms back in front. Ciaran Long took Phoenix’s third shot but could not beat King and the Phantoms had won the extra point.

Stephen Fone was awarded the man of the match for Phoenix after facing 40 shots and the impressive Tom Carlon took the home award.
