A yearning to play in North America is the driving force behind 19-year old Scottish forward Iain Bowie and he believes signing for the Manchester Phoenix can only help his cause.
Originally from Kirkcaldy, Iain Bowie is hungry to learn and progress his career as a hockey player and he jumped at the opportunity to join the Phoenix as they embark upon their inaugural campaign in the English Premier League. “I’m keen to learn and playing for someone like Tony Hand can only benefit my long-term ambitions and future – I was over the moon to get the chance to sign for him. I’m working hard in the gym every day already, riding the bike for up to 50 minutes and then concentrating on upper body development in preparation for the season,” he advised.
With experienced last season in both the Elite and English Premier leagues, Bowie is keen to increase his goal production on last season when he notched ten, five each for the Edinburgh Capitals and Sheffield Scimitars, and he knows that the next couple of years could help realise his target aim of playing in North America.
“As a junior player at Fife, I was coached by Mark Morrison and he has been a huge influence on me. I keep in touch with him and he’s said that if I continue to work hard, learn and progress my career here, he’ll try and get me a chance to cross the Atlantic. Joining the Phoenix is an honour for me, everyone tells me they’re a great organisation and I’ll be working as hard as I can to justify the faith Tony Hand has shown in me,” he added.
Phoenix player coach Tony Hand commented, “Iain is still learning his trade, but I thought I saw enough in him last season to give him a chance with the Phoenix this year. He’s got a goal in his mind and there’s nothing wrong with that. First and foremost though is getting ready for a tough season in a new league, adjusting to a new group of team mates and working hard in training to claim a regular place in the line-up amongst a talented group of British players.”
