Hamer gets the Phoenix call

Friday, 9th May 2008

Having starred for the all-conquering Phoenix Under-18 team last season, 17-year old Phil Hamer is the youngest recruit to Manchester's Elite League squad.

Phoenix head coach Tony Hand commented, "Last season, on the recommendation of the Junior Club coaching staff, Phil trained regularly with the Elite League squad and acquitted himself well. He's got good speed, good hand skills and looks to have the potential to make the step up."

Salford-born Hamer stands 6ft 1ins, shoots right-handed and is looking to enter the new season tipping the scales around the 170lb mark. "I know I need to add a little more size and weight in the right areas, and that's what I'll be concentrating on throughout the summer," he said.

"I was a little shocked to get the call from Tony Hand asking me to join the squad and not just to train, delighted, but shocked," he added. "I really enjoyed training with Tony and the Elite players last season, and it certainly helped my game, a big difference and improvement. To get the chance now to join the Phoenix at the Elite level is fantastic. I know it's going to be a lot more hard work, but I'm ready for that. I just want the chance to play and reward the faith Tony has shown in me."

Hand noted, "Phil will also probably play down with the Phoenix ENL squad if the two schedules don't always clash and that too will help his development. He's young and hungry and I like that. He'll get his chance and hopefully, he grab it with both hands."

A Phoenix spokesperson closed saying, "we've agreed terms and verbally shaken hands with another player today and once his signed contract is returned, we'll make that announcement."
